Who is the Shopify Agentic plan for?
Use this route when your main storefront runs on WooCommerce, a custom backend or another commerce platform and the task is distribution through Shopify’s supported AI channels. Shopify’s plan help explicitly separates this audience from merchants already using Shopify as their ecommerce platform. Existing Shopify stores should use the Agentic Storefronts setup guide instead. [1]
Consider fictional Cedar Outfitters, which sells a one-time retail item through its own store for an illustrative $29. Cedar wants agent-assisted discovery without moving its main website. Its first decision is where buyers should complete payment. This example is an editorial planning scenario, not a customer story or tested integration.
Keep that decision narrow. A new discovery channel can be useful while the merchant continues using its established checkout. If Cedar wants a channel’s direct checkout, the project also includes payment configuration, order handling and fulfilment synchronization. Treat those as explicit requirements before assuming that a catalog import completes the work.
Choose the merchant setup path
Check channel eligibility before importing the catalog
The Shopify Agentic plan help makes eligibility depend on the business, products, customer location, payment setup and selected AI channel. Products must satisfy Shopify Catalog requirements, and eligibility does not guarantee placement in an AI answer. Read the current channel guide and the options shown in the merchant’s admin for the intended route. [1]
Record one product type and customer destination, then identify any unresolved account or policy requirement. Do not borrow a country list from a general payment provider or Google’s protocol documentation. The relevant evidence is the selected Shopify channel’s current rule, applied to this merchant and product.
Before selling through storefronts on the plan, Shopify’s setup guide also requires business details, registration documents and identity verification. An authorized owner or permitted staff member completes that process. Keep onboarding evidence separate from technical acceptance: identity verification does not establish that a variant, payment or delivery integration works. [2]
Prepare catalog data and the external product destination
For Shopify Agentic plan discovery, the official procedure starts with importing products, reviewing store details, adding policies and connecting the existing domain. Products also need an external product URL pointing to their listing on the merchant’s existing store. Optional knowledge-base and grouping work can improve how the business information is represented. [2]
Cedar should map each imported item to its actual external listing and variant. Check the destination as a buyer: the selected color, quantity and current terms should remain understandable. A link to the store homepage leaves the customer to reconstruct the offer and makes incorrect substitutions harder to detect.
Assign an owner for price and inventory updates. A one-off import may become stale when the primary platform changes. Choose an update process appropriate to the catalog’s actual change frequency, and record which system remains authoritative. This is a recommended integration decision, not a claim that every platform has an automatic Shopify connector.
Review policy consistency as part of the same task. The offer, external product page and checkout should communicate the same seller and purchase conditions. If a channel displays abbreviated product information, the customer still needs a route to the terms relevant to approving the purchase.
Choose discovery referral or Shopify-powered direct checkout
The Shopify Agentic plan setup guide describes two distinct purchase paths. ChatGPT sends buyers to the existing online-store checkout. Supported direct-checkout channels require the additional checkout and order setup, followed by manual activation; direct checkout is off by default on this plan. A general existing-Shopify-store default must not override that plan-specific instruction. [2]
For Cedar’s discovery-only route, inspect the transition to its original store and retain purchase attribution in the existing analytics process. For direct checkout, determine how the resulting Shopify order reaches Cedar’s existing fulfilment operation. Shopify’s setup guide explicitly says ChatGPT order history is not available in Shopify for this plan. [2]
Avoid presenting the alternatives as one universal checkout experience. A product can be visible in an AI channel while the customer still pays at the original store. The implementation record should name the channel, destination, payment owner and order system so support knows where to investigate a failed purchase.
Two purchase paths and their operating boundaries
Scroll the table to compare all columns.
| Question | Referral to existing store | Shopify-powered direct checkout |
|---|---|---|
| Where payment completes | Original online-store checkout | Supported AI channel’s Shopify-powered checkout |
| Primary setup | Accurate catalog, external product links and channel requirements | Catalog plus payment, shipping/tax, order setup and manual channel activation |
| Order evidence | Existing store’s order and analytics; ChatGPT history is not in Shopify for this plan | Shopify order joined to the merchant’s chosen fulfilment workflow |
| Merchant task | Preserve the selected offer into store checkout | Keep external fulfilment and Shopify order status consistent |
| Cost evidence | Original checkout’s applicable terms | Plan’s payment/transaction charges and any paid apps or services |
What does the Shopify Agentic plan cost?
Shopify states that this plan has no monthly subscription fee. Purchases in an AI channel’s Shopify-powered direct checkout incur Shopify Payments fees or third-party transaction fees depending on the provider. Paid apps and services can add charges, and moving to a paid Shopify subscription introduces that plan’s fee. Consult the current account terms rather than inferring a universal all-in rate. [1]
Build the cost estimate around the chosen purchase destination. A referral completed in the original store and a Shopify-powered direct purchase can involve different processing arrangements. Keep the product’s gross order value, payment charges, optional app costs and operational work separate. The illustrative $29 item is an order amount, not a quoted provider rate.
Ask who reconciles each route’s orders and who owns a payment mismatch. Those duties affect the implementation even when the plan itself has no recurring subscription charge. Do not invent a support cost or savings percentage; use documented charges and actual operating evidence when available.
Keep payment, order and fulfilment ownership explicit
For direct checkout, the setup guide calls for a payment provider, shipping and tax configuration, and order-management setup. It describes fulfilling from Shopify or exporting orders into an existing workflow; external fulfilment status must be reflected back in Shopify. Follow that current procedure and the selected provider’s supported operations. [2]
For Cedar, assign one owner for the product record, one for the financial result and one for delivery. These can be the same team, but the responsibilities need separate evidence. If the customer pays and delivery fails, retain the paid order and recover the original purchase rather than asking the buyer’s agent to order again.
Test the join before adding more products. A visible checkout confirmation is insufficient if the warehouse or entitlement service never receives the order. Conversely, importing an order into the existing system should not trigger another charge through the store’s ordinary payment extension.
Does this replace the existing platform or publish a Shopify store?
The plan is designed to coexist with the existing commerce platform. Shopify also allows building a Shopify online store on the plan, but publishing that store and accepting its online-store checkout orders requires moving to a paid subscription. Do not confuse access to agentic storefronts with a published replacement Shopify website. [1]
The Shopify Agentic plan therefore leaves Cedar with an architectural choice. It can keep discovery referrals, integrate supported channel orders into existing operations, or separately decide to migrate later. Compare those tasks on their own merits. A distribution experiment does not require promising a full platform move to customers.
Verify one route and keep an acceptance record
Use the checklist below for one product and one channel. Record the actual plan, configuration date, destination and expected outcome. Check current terms and product identity through the complete journey, then locate the corresponding payment and order records in their authoritative systems.
Include an unavailable variant, changed total, rejected payment, lost response and delivery exception where the selected route supports safe testing. These are proposed acceptance cases, not observations made by this guide. Assign each unresolved blocker to the person who can obtain the evidence or change the integration.
Use the existing Shopify store guide for ordinary Agentic Storefronts controls, the WooCommerce or custom-store guide for the primary-platform boundary, and the readiness worksheet for open work. Keep the Shopify Agentic plan decision tied to the customer journey and the order your team must support.
