Separate the channel from the checkout experience
Shopify's agentic storefronts bring product discovery and purchasing into AI channels, but the checkout experience is not identical across those channels. Start by choosing a particular customer journey. A product surfaced in ChatGPT and a product bought through an eligible Google direct checkout have different interface and measurement boundaries. [1]
Use a hypothetical merchant selling a simple, one-time retail item. Its illustrative price is $29. The customer finds it through an AI surface and expects the correct variant, an accurate final total and the disclosed delivery terms. This article does not claim that the hypothetical store is eligible or that a transaction was tested. The actual product type, country and configuration determine the route.
The dated matrix gives the main channel distinction. It is a navigation aid, not an exhaustive eligibility table. Read the linked channel-specific help and inspect the settings available to the real store. A public channel name is not evidence that a particular merchant has every capability enabled.

| Channel | Documented checkout path | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT | Referral to the online-store checkout | US customer route, Catalog eligibility and completed policies |
| Google AI Mode and Gemini | Eligible Shopify-powered direct checkout; referral when disabled | Rollout, US store/customer scope, Merchant Center and unsupported features |

| Meta surfaces | Direct checkout described where supported and activated | Current channel-specific requirements and actual store settings |
ChatGPT is currently a Shopify referral route
Shopify's ChatGPT guide says customers complete their purchase in the online-store checkout, through an in-app browser or a new tab on the web. It also says there is no ChatGPT direct-checkout activation setting in Shopify admin. Do not tell a merchant to find a switch that the current documentation says does not exist. [2]
For this documented route, Shopify requires selling to customers in the United States, while allowing the store itself to be based outside the United States. Products must be eligible for Shopify Catalog, and the merchant must meet the listed terms and store-policy requirements. Those are route-specific facts checked on October 8, 2026, not a general statement about all ChatGPT commerce integrations. [2]
A referral route can still produce real revenue. The customer reaches the store's checkout, so the merchant should evaluate that actual path instead of treating it as an inferior failed version of native checkout. Measure referrals, valid checkout attempts and completed orders separately. A product recommendation alone is not evidence that the customer bought it.
Google direct checkout has a separate current scope
Shopify's Google AI Mode and Gemini help qualifies direct checkout as a rollout that may not yet be available in a particular store. Its listed requirements include a US-based store selling to US customers and a valid Merchant Center configuration. Products reach the channel through Merchant Center, including the supported Google & YouTube synchronization route. [4]
The same help lists unsupported product types and checkout features. Subscriptions, bundles, customizable products and B2B-only products are among the listed exclusions for that direct-checkout route. Check the full current list rather than assuming your ordinary website configuration appears unchanged inside the channel. [4]
A merchant that relies on a custom checkout block needs particular care. The documentation explains that some blocks may not display and that certain client-side measurement does not run in direct checkout. If essential information or input exists only in a website customization, verify the supported channel behavior before inviting customers to use it. [4]
Review the controls in the Agentic section
Shopify documents management under Sales channels > Agentic. The default managed setting can allow Shopify to manage channel access and enroll stores in future channels. Turning that setting off exposes more manual control over catalog access, automatic enrollment and applicable direct-checkout behavior. Read the current help before changing a store-wide setting. [3]
The walkthrough below is based on public documentation. It is not a screenshot of an inspected merchant admin, and this guide has not changed a store's settings. An authorized store owner or appropriately permitted staff member should inspect the actual configuration and record the intended channel behavior.
Treat access and checkout controls as commercial decisions with operational effects. Disabling catalog access is different from disabling direct checkout while retaining discovery. The documented Google path can continue referring a customer to the store when direct checkout is off. Your public instructions should describe the actual chosen path rather than a generic “AI selling enabled” label.
Public-documentation setup walkthrough
- Open the relevant controls
An authorized operator goes to Sales channels > Agentic.
- Review managed behavior
Check whether Allow Shopify to manage for me matches the merchant’s intent.
- Inspect the chosen channel
Separate catalog access from direct-checkout controls where available.
- Confirm prerequisites
Review current channel eligibility, policies and catalog or feed configuration.
- Save and verify the journey
Apply only intended changes, then inspect the actual customer purchase path.
Prepare the catalog for the purchase you intend to support
Check the product identifier, variant, availability, title, description and relevant policy information. A shopper looking for a specific size or license should not be directed to a superficially similar item. Keep the catalog and store's authoritative purchase terms consistent so a discovered offer does not become an unexpected checkout.
For Google distribution, inspect the Merchant Center side as well as Shopify. A synchronization route is useful only if the relevant product and store data are accepted and current. Record unresolved product or policy issues before evaluating conversion. More traffic cannot repair an offer that is unavailable or materially different when the customer tries to buy it.
Use useful descriptive text rather than keyword stuffing. Explain what the product is, who it is for and the attributes that matter to selection. Do not invent reviews, popularity claims or urgency to make an agent more likely to recommend it. A customer's financial decision needs accurate terms more than a repeated search phrase.
Keep payment and fulfilment responsibilities visible
The store needs a current total and a supported payment method for the actual checkout route. Direct checkout and store checkout can have different supported interface behavior, so verify the provider and customer action through the intended path. Do not infer support from an ordinary website purchase performed through a different route.
After the order is accepted, the merchant still needs fulfilment and support. Shopify's overview says the merchant retains the customer relationship and post-purchase experience. Record how the order appears to operators and how they identify the originating channel or referral. [1]
A paid but undelivered order requires delivery recovery or a controlled resolution. It should not lead the buyer's assistant to create another purchase. Keep the order and payment references available to support, and use the store's actual refund and customer-service processes. No AI-channel label removes those duties.
Read fees and reporting for the specific channel
Shopify's ChatGPT and Google help pages currently say there are no additional selling fees for their described routes beyond standard payment processing fees. That is a dated statement about those documented channel arrangements. It is not a promise that every provider, app, channel or future configuration has no other cost. [2] [4]
Review your actual platform, app and payment terms when estimating the merchant's cost. Keep processing costs separate from order value. If another connector or service is involved, include its current charges rather than presenting a channel help sentence as the complete cost of the store's architecture.
Shopify's management guide describes channel performance reporting and notes that reported sales can aggregate referral-based and direct-checkout sales. Use that distinction when interpreting results. A sales total alone should not be used to claim that every included customer completed a native in-channel checkout. [3]
Test the customer journey that the store actually offers
For the hypothetical $29 item, check discovery of the correct variant, the displayed purchase terms, the checkout location and the resulting order. Then test an unavailable variant, a changed total, a rejected payment and a delivery exception through safe supported methods. Record the expected outcome before evaluating the result.
If the route is a referral, inspect the transition into the online store and confirm the selected item remains correct. If it is direct checkout, check that required product information and customer inputs are supported in that interface. Do not use a normal website test as proof that the direct-checkout configuration works.
Preserve the date, channel, store configuration and evidence. These recommended scenarios are not a claim that this guide tested a Shopify store. Ask the relevant merchant owner or integration team to review the actual records and fix unresolved boundaries before widening the launch.
- Confirm the chosen channel discovers the exact variant and accurate current product terms.
- Verify the documented store and customer eligibility and the actual checkout destination.
- Complete a supported safe test purchase and locate the corresponding order and financial reference.
- Test an unavailable variant, changed total and rejected payment with a clear outcome.
- Verify fulfillment and paid-order delivery recovery without purchasing twice.
- Record the source date, store configuration, expected outcome and actual evidence; this guide has not run these tests.
Monitor channel changes without rewriting the whole store
Keep the channel-specific source links with your operating record and revisit material requirements when the platform changes. Protocol development, product rollout and merchant eligibility can move independently. An existing checkout can remain functional while a new channel changes its discovery or onboarding rules.
Assign a person to review unexpected order states and catalog mismatches. The most useful pilot report explains where the customer stopped and which owner can resolve it. Avoid interpreting a directional catalog search preview as a guarantee of ranking or future revenue.
Use the readiness checklist to track concrete blockers and the order-management guide for post-payment recovery. Shopify agentic commerce is best evaluated as an actual merchant purchase journey: accurate product data, a supported checkout path, verifiable payment and delivery the customer can obtain and support can explain.
